Patrol: Nissan's
Legendary 4x4 is a pure, uncompromising shift from the
ordinary
You live in
one of the biggest countries in the world. There
are over seven and a half million square kilometres
to explore. And when you venture out, this
forbidding continent will throw everything it has at
you. From scorching deserts to freezing
mountaintops Australia's rugged
landscapes resist occupation at every
turn.
It's little wonder, then, that
the Patrol has been an automotive legend for so
long. For more than 40 years, Patrol
has relentlessly proved its integrity,
toughness and durability to survive everything Australian
conditions throw at it.
The latest evolution of the
Nissan Patrol maintains this icon's legendary
status while also providing extraordinary
levels of design and some very handy and
practical features. After all, if you're going
to travel through some of the most rugged areas on earth,
you'll appreciate doing it in the comfort of
Patrol.
Patrol provides agile performance
driven by a variety of petrol and diesel
engines.
The 4.8 litre petrol
engine smoothly delivers an impressive 180 kW,
making it the most powerful in its class. It also
offers a massive 3,500 kg braked towing capacity.
Add to that a five speed automatic transmission with
manual shift mode to give you fuel-efficient high sped
cruising in automatic mode while cruising the highways or
take full advantage of the Patrol engine's power with the
manual mode when you're off-road or
towing.
The Patrol is also available with a
choice of two powerful, yet economical diesel
engines.
There's the 118 kW 3.0 litre DOHC
direct injection turbo with intercooler. This
engine offers all the fuel efficeinecy you'd expect
from the latets diesel technology, combined with
the eager engine
performance normally attributed to petrol
engines.
So much so, the ST 3.0 litre diesel
Patrol has been named by the NRMA and RACV as having the
lowest weekly operating costs of any large 4WD in this
market.
Meanwhile, the 4.2 litre intrercooled
turbo diesel has heaps of low down grunt to get you into,
and out of, some very tough spots. It also offers
plenty of power to provide excellent high speed and
overtaking performance.
Whichever you choose,
you're guaranteed to have an abundance
of the power you need to see whichever parts of
Australia you'd like.
Patrol is all about taking the rough
with the smooth. Turn off the beaten track and you
can shift directly from 2WD to 4WD on the move. The
locking front hubs (ST, ST-S, ST-L and Ti) engage
automatically when 4WD is chosen. In addition, a
dual-range transfer gearbox gives the driver the further
option of easily selected high or low range ratios.
Low ratio is designed to cope with more demanding
terrain - the type where Patrol has earned its
long-standing reputation.
A big contributor to the Patrol's
handling is the All-Terrain suspension. Heavy duty
coil springs provide superior durability and ride comfort
on any surface. There are telescopic shock
absorbers front and rear as well as a stabiliser bar for
improved cornering.
The G-Sensor Anti-Lock Braking System
(ABS) actually detects what sort of surface the Patrol is
on and automatically adjusts itself to best handle the
situation. It comes standard on the Ti, ST-S and
ST-L models.
The construction of the Patrol also
greatly influences your enjoyment of the of the
Patrol's ride. It has a low centre of
gravity, well-proven wheelbase and a tight turning
circle. At the same time, the all steel body on a
strong, separate ladder chassis keeps occupants very
comfortable as well as safe.
